In 2015 The Society for Organic Petrology (TSOP) will hold its annual conference in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This is great news as it will help highlight and educate the international science community on Indonesia’s extensive and varied hydrocarbon resources.
The conference organizers are Dr Tim A. Moore (Cipher & University of Canterbury, Christchurch), Dr Chairul Nas (Trisakti University, Jakarta), and Dr Hendra Amijaya (Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta). The host organisation will be the Geological Engineering Department of Gadjah Mada University.
Yogyakarta is a centre of Javanese culture; its history and art dates back more than 2000 years. It’s a dynamic, rich and exciting area with attractions such as Borobudur and Prambanan which are large Buddhist and Hindu temples, respectively, that are over a thousand years old.
The timing of the conference will likely be in September, but the exact date will be defined over the next several months. In addition to the 2 days of technical talks, a field trip to East Kalimantan is planned. Tertiary coal sedimentary rocks will examined as well as the Mahakam delta. Visits will include coal mines, modern fluvial processes and peat forming environments.
If you want to be kept abreast of the planning, send an email (tmoore@ciphercoal.com) and/or visit the TSOP web site (www.tsop.org).
Hope to see you in Yogyakarta in 2015!
